Today, let's talk about...
Tips for Enhancing Your Home Cooking Skills
Improving your cooking skills does not require formal training. Here are some practical tips to make your home cooking more enjoyable and successful:
1. Start with Basics
Focus on mastering a few fundamental techniques—sautéing, roasting, grilling, and baking. These skills serve as the backbone of many recipes. For example, learning to sauté vegetables can greatly expand your ability to create delicious stir-fries, sauces, and more. Then again, the air fryer and crock pot are handy and shouldn't be underestimated.
And if you're not sure where to start, pick up a simple cookbook. Follow the recipe step-by-step and you might be surprised how much potential you have! Here's the link to two of my favorite cookbooks. They both have southern favorite recipes and are written so they are easy to follow.
PASS THE PLATE https://amzn.to/4dWXtRQ This version is actually a collection of North Carolina church recipes. My mother-in-law gave me a copy when I married her son. Every recipe I tried was a hit. It's an oldie but a goody.

2. Organize Your Kitchen
A tidy and organized kitchen will streamline your cooking process. Ensure that utensils, pots, and ingredients are easily accessible. Create a designated prep area to make your cooking experience more efficient.
3. Invest in Quality Tools
While you don’t need all the gadgets on the market, having quality tools can improve your cooking significantly. A sharp chef’s knife, sturdy cutting board, and heavy-duty pots and pans are essential for any home cook. These tools make it easier to prepare ingredients and cook food evenly.
My secret weapons? A must-have tomato knife. If you've never had one...order one today. Here's the link to the one I have: https://amzn.to/43KJf1KGame It doesn't have to be an expensive one. This is a game changer.
My second secret weapon is Mason Jars. Yep, good old-fashioned canning jars you can find by the case at the hardware or local Walmart. I like the smaller jars because you'll get a hefty single serving out of it. Here's the link on Amazon if you want them shipped to your doorstep: https://amzn.to/3HoXbai I use them to prep fresh salads. My salads last a week to ten days in those jars and taste just as fresh as the day you made them! And they look s beautiful on my refrigerator shelf.
*I'll blog in detail about that in a separate entry...so watch for it but the basic idea is to start with the wetter ingredients at the bottom and work up to the top to your greens. (More to come soon)
4. Experiment with Flavors
Don't be afraid to explore unique flavors and cuisines. Try spices, herbs, or ingredients from around the world. I recently learned about Tajin. I've added it to my spice rack right next to the truffle salt. This will enhance your dishes and expose you to new cooking traditions. Websites like this one offer many diverse recipes to inspire your culinary adventures.
5. Practice Food Safety
Food safety is crucial in any kitchen. Always wash your hands before handling food, store raw ingredients separately, and ensure food is cooked to the recommended temperatures. Familiarizing yourself with food safety guidelines can prevent illness and keep everyone healthy.
Ready - Set - GO!
You've got this. Drop me a line and let me know if you were so motivated you purchased a new cookbook or are trying out a new recipe.

ENJOY THIS FREE DOWNLOAD to the recipe for the cake in the competition in my novel, The Secret Ingredient as seen on Hallmark Channel. It is so delicious and if you don't want to attempt the multiple layers, just bake it and then assemble in layers like a trifle in a bowl with layers of the berry cream in between. <chef's kiss!>
