10 Simple Tips to Take the Stress Out of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has a way of sneaking up on us, doesn’t it?

One minute we’re sipping pumpkin-spice lattes, and the next we’re wrestling a turkey the size of a small child. But this year, you don’t have to let the holiday run you ragged.

With a little planning and a whole lot of grace, you can enjoy a Thanksgiving that feels peaceful, meaningful, and downright lovely.

Here are ten simple ways to make your holiday lighter and more joyful.

1. Start with a Realistic Plan

Before the rush kicks in, jot down what matters most to you. Not what you think you “should” do. Not what everyone else "expects" of you. Pick the handful of things that truly make the day special, and write them down in ink. Let the rest fall away...or if you must, write them in pencil at the bottom to remind yourself they are optional. Trust me, Thanksgiving will not be ruined if you can't make Aunt Birdie's sweet potato pie.

A calm heart starts with a clear plan.

2. Keep Your Menu Manageable

You don’t need six casseroles and three pies to prove your love. Choose dishes you enjoy making and that won’t keep you chained to the stove. If Grandma’s sweet potato casserole is non-negotiable, great. But the rest? Make it simple.

3. Delegate Like a Pro

Let folks bring a dish, drinks, or dessert, even if you’re the one hosting. People love to contribute. Have a short list of things people can bring or do on hand, so you can give suggestions if asked. You’ll enjoy the day a whole lot more when you’re not juggling every last detail by yourself.

4. Prep Ahead Wherever You Can

Chop veggies, bake pies, set the table, and lay out serving dishes the day before. A little work early on makes Thanksgiving morning smooth as gravy.

5. Choose One Corner to Make Cozy

Don’t worry about the whole house. Spruce up one inviting spot, maybe a candle on the table or a soft throw on the chair. A warm corner can lift the whole mood.

6. Build in Quiet Moments

Even five minutes on the porch with a cup of tea can settle your spirit. Download an ebook to steal away and read. Get swept away to a small town and forget your troubles. You'll get more done in less time if you are not stressed as tight as a banjo string! Take a breath, look around, and let yourself enjoy the sweetness of the day.

7. Ask for Help Before You Need It

You know that moment when everything boils over at once? Let’s skip it this year. Ask someone to carve the turkey or watch the rolls so you can breathe. Folks want to help, and there’s kindness in letting them.

8. Let Go of Perfection

If the rolls brown a little too much or the table isn’t picture-perfect, it’s fine. Thanksgiving is about connection, not perfection. Some of the best memories come from the little mishaps.

9. Create a Simple Gratitude Ritual

Invite everyone to share one thing they’re thankful for. It doesn’t have to be formal. Just a moment of honesty and heart can shift the whole atmosphere. There is a 7-day Gratitude Journal on my website. Here's the link to day one...do them one day at a time or binge-read them all at once. Your way! -> https://www.nancynaigle.com/post/7-day-gratitude-walk

10. End the Day on a Sweet, Simple Note

A quiet walk, an easy movie, or a leftover turkey sandwich with loved ones… ending softly makes the whole day feel richer.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have to drain you. With a simpler plan and a gentler pace, it can feel like a warm blessing instead of a marathon. Here’s to a holiday filled with calm hearts, grateful spirits, and plenty of joy around your table.

I'll be posting a few quick and easy version recipes, coloring sheets, and inspirational messages on the blog until Thanksgiving. I hope they will inspire you.

Hugs and thanks for being here with me.

It all started with a desire to write one book to help one busy gal through one bad day. Over forty-five books later my dream is the same. I hope to whisk you away in a story that helps you relax and regain balance, while tickling a memory, making you smile, and interrupting any worries with a reminder that there is always hope. Thank you for taking this journey with me.
