Three Festive Trivia Notes

01

The Inspiration

My agent brought me the opportunity to write a small town Christmas story for St. Martin's Press. I'd never thought about writing a Christmas book, but it's my favorite holiday and small town has always been my happy place. So why not?

I submitted 3 story ideas. I worked tirelessly on two of them, but the third was about an aunt who lived on a small farm in Virginia. Ya know...sort of write what you know. ;) AND that's the story they picked.

I was told Christmas should be in the title. I named the heroine Joy and started writing...and it all came together.

 Christmas Joy was born.

02

The Town

It wasn't until final edits of the novel that a proofreader brought it to the attention of my editor that the sweet town I'd created in Crystal Lake, North Carolina was the same name of the town the horror movie Friday the 13th took place in!

WHAT!?!

I never watch scary movies so I had no idea! My editor was as shocked as I was.

We quickly rescued Ruby, Joy and Ben from harms way by moving them to the quiet and quaint town in  CRYSTAL FALLS.

Thank goodness it was caught before it went to production!

03

The Movie

Getting an offer for a novel adaptation is a dream come true. There are trade-offs. You see lots of books get optioned, but not many actually get to the screen.

I got the news on Valentine's Day 2018 that Crown Media was moving into production with Christmas Joy. We filmed in Vancouver, BC across several locations including Maple Ridge, Langley and Pitt Meadows.

It was amazing that when I arrived and was taken on set the scene they were filming was my favorite scene in the book. The part where the ornament breaks!

The timing was serendipitous.

There was no way anyone could have known that was my favorite scene, or what time of day I was going to arrive on set. Yet, there I sat in a directors chair with my name on the back watching it come to life with snow machine snowflakes falling across my shoulders.

The perfect moment.

Dreams do come true.
