Valentine’s Day often brings stories of love and warmth, but few know the charming tale behind The Secret Ingredient , a novel that blossomed into a Hallmark movie. This story began with an unexpected muse: a tiny micro pig. The heroine, Kelly McIntyre, shares her life with this adorable pet, a detail inspired by a real-life encounter that sparked the entire creative journey. This post reveals the delightful trivia behind the novel and movie, showing how small moments can lead to big dreams. Kelly McIntyre’s micro pig inspiration from a Crown Media office visit. Seriously!! He's adorable, right? The Spark Behind the Story The idea for Kelly McIntyre’s micro pig came during a visit to the set of Christmas Joy in early 2018. That was my first novel adaptation, and truly a dream-come-true trip. While having lunch with colleagues from the Crown Media New York office, I was shown pictures of various Hallmark star animals. You know. Happy the dog. Happy the cat, a bird and then....among all these critters was a picture of a tiny pink and black pig, small enough to hold in two hands. The sight of this Hallmark exec smooching on this little pig was so endearing that it inspired a promise: 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙢𝙮 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩 𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙡 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙥𝙞𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙬𝙣, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙚'𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙝𝙞𝙢 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙈𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙩. This moment was more than just a cute distraction. It planted the seed for The Secret Ingredient , a story that would later capture hearts on both the page and the screen. The micro pig became a symbol of warmth, charm, and a touch of whimsy that perfectly fit the novel’s tone. Bringing Kelly McIntyre to Life ***SPOILER ALERT *** Kelly McIntyre is not your typical heroine. She’s a country girl with a big heart and an even bigger love for her pet pig. This unique character trait sets her apart and adds a layer of authenticity and fun to the story. The micro pig is not just a pet but a companion who marches proudly down Main Street of the accepting community of Bailey's Fork, North Carolina, embodying the spirit of community and connection. The choice to include a micro pig was deliberate. And the story in my heart g rew pretty quickly. Since Kelly is on the rebound after Andrew York leaves for the chance of a lifetime training in Paris with the best chefs in the world, Kelly gets this micro pig to fill that void. Which is also how that little guy got the name GRAY. G ood R iddance A ndrew Y ork. Unfortunately, I got news early on in the process of taking the book to the screen that Hallmark felt that GRAY (Good Riddance Andrew York) was a little harsh so they change his name to George. WHAT? Clearly they don't realize we girls have been known to be way more harsh than that. Come on...we've all cut a face out of a picture, or drawn horns on him, right?!? Or Worse?!? From Page to Screen Turning The Secret Ingredient into a Hallmark movie was a natural next step. I'd written that book for the brand new at the time Hallmark Publishing. Hallmark movies are known for their heartwarming plots and relatable characters, and Kelly’s story fit perfectly. The micro pig, a small but significant detail, wasn't east to translate to the screen, so he was recast with a mini Australian Shepherd. Super cute, but not nearly the fun of a pet pig. The movie will air again on the morning of February 15th offering readers a chance to revisit the story and enjoy the charm that started it all. It’s a celebration of love, community, and the little things that make life special. Read the book. Watch the movie. Count the differences. With the honor of having several movies made from my novels, The Secret Ingredient is my favorite. It's impossible to fit an entire novel into a made-for-television length movie and I'd have loved it if Andrew's story arc with his father had been included, and the sweet horseback riding date, and a few other moments that were special to me, but it was a big surprise when Maneet Chauhan from Chopped! was cast as the baking competition host. I've been a huge fan of hers and that show, so it was totally a win-win! Lessons from the Journey The story behind The Secret Ingredient is an inside peek at what sparks my inspiration and creativity. Sometimes, the smallest moments—like seeing a tiny pig on a phone screen—can lead to something much bigger. I stay open to unexpected ideas and to embrace the unique details that will hopefully make my stories special to you. I hope this trivia adds a new layer of understanding for you. I've written a few stories that have ties to Valentine's Day. In fact, my very first publication was a short story called FOREVER IN MY HEART. It was sort of a prequel to a book that would later be releases as LIFE AFTER PERFECT featuring the hero of that story. Then, The Secret Ingredient which later became a Hallmark Movie...in fact it airs the morning of February 15th this year. If you haven't seen it, you might enjoy watching it and comparing it to the book. There are a few differences, and of course, lots left out, but then that's the movies for you. It's hard to get an 80,000 word novel into a 20,000 word script, so you sort of have to forgive that part. ;) But THE WEDDING RANCH starts out with Valentine's Day as sort of the bad guy. Poor Lorri is dreading this Valentine's Day, and things get worse before they get better, but I think you'll love the rebound on this one. Are you a Kindle Unlimited Reader? I love Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, but I'm sort of guilty of downloading more books than I get the time to read. Are you like that, too? YES OR NO? NO? You're my hero! I want to be just like you when I grow up. Seriously, that's awesome. I overestimate my free time, so I end up with lots of books on my Kindle that I never even start. And yet, here I am still adding to the TBR pile. YES? The struggle is real, right? So many books. Too little time. And on top of it, did you know the author of those books you never read don't end up getting paid for them until and unless you read to a certain point in the book? It's true. You see that Kindle Unlimited model is built on a Page-Read Metric. Basically, the author gets paid when you read a certain number of pages ( which changes due to the number of books being read and length and some other magical bean counts I believe ). All that to say. If you download books by your favorite authors, we would love it if you'd flip through the novel when you buy it so we get paid. There's nothing wrong with a busy group of mom's or career gals planning an adhoc book club get-together now and again. It's a great reason to get together, keeps the conversation light, and inspires thinking not aligned to any to-do's begging for attention, and that means better life balance. It's the week before Thanksgiving and if you're like me you've got a grocery list a mile long and list of to-do's equally as daunting, but even with all that hanging over me, I'm already feeling that seasonal shift. It's joy, hope. It's peace in a frantic, hurried kind of way lol. Thanksgiving heightens our awareness. We're thankful, outwardly so, and grateful for everything and everyone in our lives. For the rest of 2019, and as we welcome 2020 and the new opportunities, challenges, and joy that it brings with it, we'll be feeling closer than ever. Don't get caught up in the stress of it. Almond Honey Cake with Berry Cream This trendy naked-style almond honey cake with light whipped cream and seasonal berries is a refreshing summer treat. Both beautiful and tasty.            Follow this recipe, or hop down to the EASY BAKE ME version and still get praise!   Ingredients Cake 2 1/2 cups cake flour  2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 3/4 cups sugar 5 large egg whites, room temperature 1/2 cup sour cream, room temperature 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup milk, room temperature 1/3 cup honey as a drizzle when assembling Whipped Cream & Berries 2 cups cold heavy whipping cream 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract  2 cups fresh berries Instructions Prep your station 1.     Let the honey, butter, eggs, sour cream, and milk come to room temp. 2.     Preheat the oven to 350°F. 3.     Grease three 8-inch round metal pans lined with parchment for easy cake removal. Mix it up 1.     In a large bowl, whisk together cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. 2.     In your mixer, beat butter for 1 minute on high speed until creamy. 3.     Add sugar and beat on high speed for 2 more minutes until fully blended. 4.     Add egg whites. Beat on high speed for about 2 minutes until well combined. 5.     Add sour cream and vanilla extract and give a couple of good stirs with a spatula. 6.     On low speed, mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just incorporated. Do not over mix. 7.     Slowly whisk milk into batter until combined. The batter will be a little thick. Bake your cake 1.     Pour batter evenly into cake pans. 2.     Bake for 22-24 minutes, or until the cakes pass the toothpick test. 3.     Allow cakes to cool completely in the pans on a wire rack before assembling. Prepare Berry Cream 1.     Using your mixer, whip your heavy cream, confectioners’ sugar, vanilla extract, and almond extract on medium-high speed until medium peaks form. It will take 3-4 minutes to get a good spreading consistency. 2.     Fold in most of the berries, keeping some aside for garnish. 3.     Use immediately or chill in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours before assembling your cake. Assemble and serve 1.     Level cakes to allow even stacking. Reserve cake crumbs. 2.     Place first cake layer on your cake stand. Drizzle a thin stream of honey over the naked cake layer. Don’t be too heavy handed; you just want a bright little taste of honey. Evenly spread 1 heaping cup of berry topping over top. Repeat this step for second and third layers. 3.     Garnish center of the top layer with fresh berries, and sprinkle some reserved cake crumbs around the cake edge. 4.     Chill assembled cake, uncovered, for at least 2 hours to let cake and topping set before serving. 5.     Serve and soak up the praise! 6.     If by chance there are leftovers, cover tightly and store in the refrigerator. EASY BAKE ME A CAKE version Almond Honey Cake with Berry Cream   Bake your cake Follow the directions on any white cake box recipe and fill three 8-inch round metal pans with the batter. Not required, but I’m a fan of parchment paper for easier removal. Bake until done. Let cool.   Prepare Berry Cream Mix frozen whipped topping, thawed in the refrigerator, with a tablespoon each of honey and almond extract, then fold in your berries.   Assemble and Serve Set one layer on your cake stand. Level the top for nice easy stacking. You can use crumbs as decoration on the top or snack on them while you put this cake together. Drizzle honey in a thin line in a back and forth motion across the cake. You’re not covering the cake, just ribboning the honey across for a little extra sweetness.   Now heap a third of your berry cream on that layer, add the next cake layer and repeat, topping with the final cake layer.   This is a naked cake. The pretty berries will add a punch of color and the sides of the cake are meant to be revealed between the bright layers. Garnish with a decorative pile of berries.
